WDD 2010

I'm so lucky that Joanne from Death of a Pancreas has already blogged about her WDD day ---
Check out her blog to see what the Houston clan did to celebrate.  Yes, I'm really that lazy!!

She has super cute pics on her post and here are a few of my pics from yesterday too!

Laura & Jo - a very cropped phone shot from Fred's phone

Me and the Littles - Yea, I lost Nate's shirt.  Nice!

My silly girls and my bad hair day!

Jim and Em

Sophie, Elise and Emma

Fred and the girls

Nate and Daddy

I love these shirts!!

Nate had so much fun!

I love this pic of Emma and Elise holding hands :)

Now for a real WDD Miracle!!

100% within goal!!  Woot-Woot!

Thank you, D for a good WDD!

You see Nate has been going through a gigantical growth spurt and his numbers have been out of control.  There may have been a little ear infection in the mix but we are still without insurance so one will never know!!  Anyway - - - Jim and I made some pretty big changes to Nate's basal rates.  We added 2 basals and upped them all!  I was afraid we would be fighting some lows but so far so good (damn, I hate it when I jinx myself like this)!

Catching up --- Halloween & Nate's NEW gecko Tummietote!!

We took a little vacation and now I am beyond behind in bloggerville.  These awesome peeps are participating in the NaBloPoMo...... this month

Lora - My Diabetic Child
Rachael - Pumpsley and Me

so I have a lot of reading to do!!  I'm trying to catch up - I promise!!

I'm also WAY behind on posting so bear with me while I try and catch up!

Today's catch-up (not ketchup or catsup) post is from last month.

Halloween!!

We had a funtabulous Halloween weekend with our annual Family Fall Festival and then trick or treating in my parent's neighborhood on Halloween evening.

This year was our 4th Annual Family Fall Festival and we had such a great time.  We had sack races, played Red Rover, had a 3-legged race and ate lots and lots of goodies.  Nate and all of the children were running around like crazy and having an absolute wonderful time.  Lucky for Nate all of that running caused his bg to run a bit low so he got to enjoy A LOT of goodies --- including marshmallows!!  He didn't so much like his roasted like the rest of us ---- he liked his straight out of the bag!!

Here are a few pictures from our 4th Annual Family Fall Festival

GaGa and Nate

Gran (my grandmother) & Nate

Nate loves marshmallows

Below are some of the pumpkin carving contest entries:

Spooky Right?

On to Halloween . . .

I thought you all might enjoy seeing Nate WEARING pants and his AWESOME NEW TUMMIETOTE from Tallygear (this is the one that we won in their give-away):

We love Cowboy Nate (wearing pants) and we love his new Tummietote that Donna custom made for Nate -- 1 pocket only for DexCom, clear window, super cute gecko print in size EXTRA SMALL!!  PERFECT!!

On to Halloween . . . just as we imagined it would be . . . SO FUN!  The girls were both mermaids (again!!) and Nate was a cowboy.  We trick or treated in my parent's neighborhood and had a wonderful time.  Nate was right on track with D --- low from walking so much and then HIGH from the entire bag of M&M's that he devoured but with all of the walking that we did he ended up right on target and it was a prefect night.  We got home, pulled out all of the yummy candy to keep and put a huge bowl out with the rest of the candy on the front porch and it was gone before we knew it.

Our entry for the pumpkin carving contest - we came in 2nd!

Emma and Sophie with our pumpkin carriage

and with Poppa's pooping pumpkin!

The Houston Five on Halloween

Taking a little break from walking

The bag is getting full and Nate is getting tired!

Mmmm!!  Lollipop!

Goodbye Candy!

PLEASE - can't we keep just a little bit more??

6 Things the Houston Family would like you to know . . .

I'm a day late for dblog day but I still want to participate so here we go - - -
The Houston family took our 1st family vacation since D came into our lives (we returned home late last night) and while gone I thought and thought about the 6 things that I would like people to know about diabetes. Ok, maybe I didn't think about it that much but here is what Jim and I came up with on our way back home.

1) The obvious #1 ---- There are several 'types' of diabetes ---- the most commonly known are Type 1 and Type 2.  When I say commonly known I mean that I believe people know that there is a type 1 and a type 2 but they have no idea what the difference is between the two.  Our immediate family (The Houston Five) is living with Type 1 or Juvenile Diabetes.  Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease.  Nate's pancreas does not work.  Period.

2) Type 1 diabetes cannot be controlled with diet and exercise. Although diet and exercise are very important for everyone to stay healthy it has nothing to do with 'controlling' type 1 diabetes.

3) There is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes --- Nate did not do anything to cause his diabetes and his humongous piece of birthday cake on his 1st birthday had nothing to do with his diagnosis 2 months later.

4) It's more than a shot!!  Yes, insulin dependent diabetics do require shots of insulin or insulin pumps to infuse the insulin into their bodies BUT there is SO much more to it.  The amount of insulin required throughout the day is a very carefully calculated amount that changes often in growing children.  Insulin is also given with each meal based on the amount of carbohydrates eaten.  Even that is not as simple as it sounds.  There are even more complicated calculations used to determine how much insulin should be given for every gram of carbohydrate eaten and even that changes depending on how much fiber or fat is involved and the ratio is often different for each and every meal.  So, all of that to say diabetes is much more than just a shot --- it is extremely complicated.

5) Diabetes is a family affair.  Our son, Nate has diabetes but it certainly effects the entire family.  Nate's sisters worry about him, his health and what he is eating constantly.  Jim and I work hard at keeping Nate safe, healthy and happy without disrupting the entire family but sometimes that is just not possible. Everything stops when Nate's blood sugar is low, meal plans change when Nate's blood sugar is high, and it seems everyone in the family always has an ear and an eye on our youngest little one.  We do the best we can at keeping our lives as normal as possible but the fact is that diabetes controls a lot of our decision making and ultimately that effects everyone in the family.

6) We hate it when you say --- "he looks so ______"
you can insert the following words ----> happy, healthy, or normal.
Yes, Nate is all of those things!   Diabetes is invisible.  You cannot see Nate's diabetes and although I often post pics of him sporting his OmniPod and DexCom in reality most days you cannot see either one or his disease. He is happy, healthy and a very normal 2-year old little boy but he does have diabetes and it is sometimes very challenging.  Just because we make it look easy does not mean that it is.

It's November and I have a lot to SAE!

November is diabetes awareness month and I have a lot to SAE.

Sarah (Sugarbetic.com) had a great idea to make November 1st SAE DAY!  Today is a day to intentionally SUPPORT, ADVOCATE, and EDUCATE the world about diabetes!  So here we go . . .

This month I will be supporting my fellow D Mama bloggers that are participating in the NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month):

Please help me support them too - - - they will be working hard posting something new everyday so let's show them some love and leave lots of comments to encourage them along the way!

This month I will advocate for for diabetes awareness by supporting Dallas Mayor, Tom Leppert's upcoming Passport to Health.  Last month we attended the mayor's press conference to announce the passport to health event and this week we will attend the Mayor’s Passport To Health Community Appreciation Luncheon presented by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and sponsored by OmniPod.

The luncheon will be held at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and the featured speakers will include former Dallas Cowboy legend Tony Dorsett; triathlete and motivational speaker Jay Hewitt; Dallas City Councilwoman Delia D. Jasso, a type 2 diabetic; renowned dolphin trainer Robyn Cox, a type 1 diabetic; Regina Taylor, a Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award-winning actress; and gospel singer Angela Blair.

Nate will be participating as a JDRF Ambassador welcoming guests and standing on stage during the opening prayer.  (Yea - wish us luck!)

Here are some pictures of our family at the the Passport to Health press conference and a link to watch the news coverage:

Nate and Mayor Leppert - High Five!

Me, Nate and Mayor Leppert
The educate is easy.  I try to raise awareness and educate about type 1 diabetes everyday.  We do not hide Nate's diabetes and when asked we are always happy to share our story.  I would have to say our hardest audience to educate are those with Type 2 diabetes or those that know someone with Type 2 diabetes --- ummm --- yea so that pretty much includes everybody.
This month I will post daily on Facebook about Type 1 and help raise awareness for all my non-D Facebook friends.
We will be traveling this month and I hope to be able to educate those around us every step of the way. When you have a 2-year old with Type 1 diabetes people tend to naturally look at you, shake their heads in sympathy and give you a little look of pity.  So, instead of just smiling and nodding as we get those looks this month I will be sharing our story, educating about type 1, telling the truth about diabetes, stopping the myths & hopefully helping to find a cure.

I will also be participating in D Blog Day on 11/9/10 - - -

**D-blog Day was started on November 9th 2005 (by Gina Capone) during Diabetes Awareness Month, to help unite diabetes bloggers and create awareness about diabetes.

This year’s topic is: 6 things you want people to know about diabetes.
Hashtag on twitter will be #dblogday

For more information head on over to Diabetes Talkfest with Gina (your diabetes BFF)

Also, on the 14th we will celebrate World Diabetes Day! This is the day where we turn everything possible into the color blue and participate in the Big Blue Test to raise awareness for diabetes! We will participate in the Big Blue Test but I have no idea yet what we are going to do for the big day.  No worries - I'll think of something --- What are you doing??

For more information on the Big Blue Test - click here and watch the video on You Tube.

And . . . I think that's all I've got for today!

Just a Mom

I am NOT a doctor, nor do I play one on this blog.

I AM a wife.
I AM the mom of 3 wonderful children.
I AM my son's pancreas.

The information provided on this blog is from our personal experiences with Type 1 diabetes. Because something works for us does not mean it will work for you.

Please consult your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about your health care options.
