To carb or not to carb . . .

Thursday 5/13 - To carb or not to carb. Today let’s blog about what we eat. And perhaps what we don’t eat. Some believe a low carb diet is important in diabetes management, while others believe carbs are fine as long as they are counted and bolused for. Which side of the fence do you fall on? What kind of things do you eat for meals and snacks? What foods do you deem bolus-worthy? What other foodie wisdom would you like to share?

This will be a short & sweet post - - -

We are just rolling with it over here.  We decided shortly after Nate's diagnosis that we would do our very best to keep Nate's life as normal as possible.  We don't keep a lot of sweets in the house but we don't restrict them either.  There are some things that the girls eat that Nate doesn't get but that will probably change once he gets older.  I don't think the girls ate Pop-Tarts when they were 2 but they sure love them now.

We are all making smarter choices around the Houston household but when we want pizza - we eat pizza and when we want cake - we eat cake.

D may take a lot of things from us but it will NOT take our pizza or cake!

The End!

Ha ha. I agree, I think our kids should have normal childhoods, replete with the requisite kid foods like everyone else. And frankly, who doesn't love a good Pop-tart. Now that you mentioned them, I feel I have to go buy some, I haven't had one in ages!

Totally with you on this one!

Pizza, cake, ice cream, pasta, Chinese food - all of it - bring it on! We attack it with extended bolus'. Although I have found Dreamfields pasta and frozen yogurt to be D friendly options to regular pasta and ice cream.

LOVE IT. We had pizza last night...and for the first time in I don't know how long - Joe didn't spike 4 hours after like he normally does...WEIRD. I am grateful for sure.

I think that's awesome. As someone who was diagnosed at a time when sugar was 100% restricted and food had to be eaten by the exchange system (whether you were hungry or not), I am so so happy that so much has changed in diabetes management. Not just for me, but for all the kids with diabetes who won't have to go through what I did growing up.

Having a 6th grader and a 1st grader, both my type 1 girls eat what ever everyone else is eating..Many times they may choose to eat the sweet later, or as my 1st grader will say " mom, Im gonna save this for a low"..lol but they both have a great A1C and they treat themselves.

So glad you wrote this! In my honest opinion I believe a LOW carb diet is dangerous for type 1s just like they go high with carbs they can go low without them! They need em for energy. Yes better choices can be made, but they are still kids, and we are still parents and sometimes (atleast 2 days a week I wont lie) they want hot dogs and fries! So they have em! Our snacks range from rice cakes, yogurt, veggie chips, grapes, apples and PB,to sometimes donuts! We stick with healthier snacks but not because hes diabetic. Because moderation is key in everyones diet!

I think when people realize and understand that type 1 is not cause my diet or sugar, then the low carb speeches will cease to exist!!

Enjoy your pizza Laura!!

I am new to D as my then 6 year old daughter was diagnosed back in may 2010. How in the world do you know how much carbs are in this stuff? When you say they go high what numbers are you talking about? We are not on the pump yet...my doc said there was nothing that proved better management...I font believe her.
